Skate in July (I)

Yes, I am a wedding and Portrait photographer, but I do love to exercise my creative muscles and shoot other things as well, like skate photography for example. (I guess that my regular readers would know that by now !!) Shooting skate is becoming a regular thing, and a great way to relieve some stress, and get a little fresh air too.

So here are a few shots from July, that I should have posted already !!

Even more sleepy Angus

Just a quick post for all the fans of our little sleepy Angus, who has a talent for sleeping just about anywhere…

And while this time round the image is not quite as funny as the 2 images from last time… It’s still worth sharing.

Anakie Gorge.

Spending time in the outdoors, I love it and so do the kids. This time of year is my favourite, its so much nicer walking in the bush in Winter than it is in Summer… A part from avoiding the heat and the obvious lack of flies, its a novelty to see the strangest things, like water in the streams and green grass…

We stopped for a break about 1/2 way, a quick snack and a drink, and we were on our way again.

Then we turned around and walked out to the Car park again.

When you Consider that, excluding myself of course, the average age of the party was less than 5*, and the fact that we walked for over 2 hours, they all did a remarkable job.

* It has often been stated my mental age is not a great deal higher than that anyway, but I guess thats a different story.

Even though we did have 2 flashes on a light stand to play with, the main light (camera left) is provided by the setting sun, I just added a little on camera fill flash to balance out the shadows.

Oh, and please feel free to comment…

I gave blood today.

Just a quick little post to say that I donated blood today… It was as close to painless as can be expected. And I have good veins… so it didnt take long at all…

If you are in Australia and are considering becoming a Blood Donor…  Log onto the Australian Red Cross Blood Service website or call 13 14 95 to register.

Lest We Forget

Today is one of the few days in the year when I actually take a moment to stop and reflect on things… and maybe shed a tear. Today I look back on my families long, proud and its fair to say at times miss guided Military Service history. I say “miss guided” not to diminish what they did or what they went through, but to attempt to convey to you the simple fact that for the most part, they (like so many others) didn’t know what they were getting themselves into. But I suppose thats enough about that…

Like many people, I feel strongly about ANZAC. I was born in Australia, and raised in New Zealand. Dads a Kiwi, Mums an Aussie. Technically I am an Aussie, but I served in the New Zealand Army… You get the idea right…? Good. Enough about me.

As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words… So here is my thousand, simple, straight forward… and Cold, just the way a beer should be.

Anzac Day - 2 Beers - By Robb Duncan - Wedding photographer in Melbourne

Two Beers, Carlton Draught from Melbourne (left) and Tui from New Zealand (right)

You might be thinking “why didn’t he use VB as the Aussie beer…?” Well, thats an easy one, you see Carlton Draught is my Dad’s favorite Aussie beer.

My one or three Kiwi readers might be thinking  ”Why did he use Tui as his New Zealand beer…?” Thats an easy one too, its MY favorite beer !!

Check out the Raise a glass appeal , supporting Veterans and their families. And do what I will be doing…  and thats raising a glass…

Water Saving & Target 155 – Part 2

Because its Earth day today, I decided to blog something environmental-ish… I do not consider myself an environmental type person, I am not even that “green” really… but I do care… a lot.

You might recall my Water Saving & Target 155 post from back in January where we as a household were using 851 litres a day… thats just over 106 litres per person per day… Thats also 49 litres a day lower than the target of 155 litres…

Well, its surprising how quickly another 3 months has passed… And another water bill… And what a surprise !!

We were hoping for under 800 litres per day for our household… or 100litres per person (remember there are 8 of us!!)… a tough goal at any time of the year, but especially tough in Summer…

Target 155 smashed - Image captured by Melbourne Wedding photographer Robb Duncan

Target 155 smashed !! - And no water was wasted in the capture of these images

Well, I am proud to announce that we SMASHED 800litres…  Smashed I say !! With our households daily water usage at just 767litres… Less than the recommneded usage for a Family of 5 !!

And thats a touch under 96litres per person per day!!

I am wondering if we will be able to keep it up… and I’m a little concerned that people will think we don’t bath enough either !! (what IS that smell?)

I am also pleased to say that Melbourne’s average personal daily usage is now only 135litres… down from a whoping 188litres just 3 months ago. How good is that?

Comments are welcome !!

How much difference can one person make ?

Donating Blood Anyone?

Those who have been reading this blog for a while might recall the post where I wanted to donate blood after Black Saturday and couldn’t get through to the Australian Red Cross… So I sent them an appointment request via their website and sat back and waited…

Well, about 7 weeks later I received a phone call to book me a time, YAY!! They did explain how busy they have been and apologised for the delay in contacting me. No worries I say, they have been busy, I get that. After the phone call, I get a text message with my appointment details, how cool is that?

And then today I get my “confirmed appointment” letter from the Australian Red Cross Blood Service, My appointment time is 2.10pm on April 28th. (I already knew that, but its nice to get a letter !)

Sleepy Angus

I often tell people that our youngest son Angus will sleep anywhere… he often tries to fall asleep at the table and has even attempted to sleep standing up.

Here are just a few high lights…!!

He decided to have a little nap after snack time…

Feeling a little bit Crabby…??

I locked myself in my studio/office almost all of this week to get some much needed processing/editing done. The last few months have been crazy and exciting and I have loved every minute of it, even if I have taken a lot longer to get things done.

Imagine…

It’s late in the afternoon, I am sitting at my desk with a whole weddings worth of photographs to wander through… I just get started and the phone rings… Yay!! Another wonderful couple wants to meet to dicuss their wedding with me, we chat, I have their date free, so we organise a time to meet. Perfect.

15 minutes later, with a vaguely tingly sort of feeling, I hang up the phone, thinking about how much I love being a Photographer. Now I am back to edting… 27 images later… the phone rings again… Yay !! A family portrait sitting enquiry, 10 minutes later Claire has booked a sitting for 3 weeks time. Perfect.

Again, that same tingly sort of feeling, I sigh, a happy grin on my face as I return to the task of editing… This time I almost find my Mojo as I hit a total of 112 images edited… when the phone rings again… Yay !! Just for something different, its someone from somewhere, wanting me to advertise in their something of some sort… yawn. No thanks.

I check my email and apart from the spam and the usual newsletters and other random stuff, there is an email from a lovely bride, asking if I have the 21th November free. Sigh, unfortunately I don’t, but I can recommend a great photographer if you would like…

By now its almost dinner time, and soon I have to meet with a couple to discuss their Wedding Album design, there’s that tingly sort of feeling again !!

And thats how it has been for months… Day in and day out… And I love every second of it !!

Finally, this afternoon, I got to step out of the office for some time out !! I needed to get outside, I was feeling more than a little caged, and almost a little crabby… (ask my wife, she will tell you!!).

I can assure you that my excuse was valid, I had to pick up 4 print orders from my Lab and drop 2 of them off on the way home, but a detour through Williamstown at sunset couldnt hurt now, could it?

So I had a little drive and a wander around and of course I shot a couple of images… And Yes, I now I feel much better, thanks for asking.

Image of the Week (3)

Image of the week is a regular blog post running every Friday (hopefully, this is only the third post… so who knows !) with the aim of showing you something a little different.

Here is this weeks Image, shot last night when Ryan (my assistant) and I took a quick trip to Newport Skate Park.

And you are right, its not Wedding Photography, or Portrait Photography… So why did I shoot it? Well, 3 reasons really.

Firstly, my young assistant Ryan has a real passion for Skate photography and its always good to shoot things you love.

Secondly, Skate is not something I regularly shoot, so its good to break out of my comfort zone and…

Thirdly,  I got to play. Shooting a lot of different images in a low pressure environment.

So there you have it. Oh, and please feel free to comment :)
