Stormy Melbourne Sunset

So often I find myself out and about as the sun sets, and more often than not I am treated to something a little special. Most times, I am in no position to stop and capture the scene, due to time constraints or a poor location, but when I do get the chance, you can be sure I take it, and its always worth the wait !!

Barwon Heads

I had a wedding at the Barwon Heads Golf Club yesterday, and there was about an hour of down time between the Bride getting her hair and make-up done in Prahran, and when everyone would arrive at 13th Beach Golf Links to get ready… And you know exactly what I like to do when I have a little down time.

Gateway in the moonlight

Its amazing what you see while driving home from a client meeting at 10pm. I had pulled over on the side of the road to take a phone call from my lovely wife who just wanted to know if I was on my way, and then told me to take care and travel safely. Looking out the passenger window of the car as I hung up the phone, this scene lay before me… I couldnt resist grabbing a camera and stepping out of the car. With the full moon low in the sky and the cold wind howling, it kind of had a Werewolf feel to it.

I know, its kinda weird… and I was in two minds about posting this one, but its just so different I couldn’t help myself.

Gateway in the moonlight

Those squiggly lines in the sky are actually stars… It was a 1.6 second exposure and like I said it was kind of cold and very windy… so keeping the camera steady was not really an option, but it fits the whole mood of the scene perfectly.

So there you have it and like I always say, please feel free to comment… Especially those of you viewing this via Facebook !!!

Beside the Lerderderg

I love to photograph almost anything… I guess you have noticed that by now… This is my life.

Beside the Lerderderg

Landscape photography is something I find relaxing, a stress relief as well as a creative outlet and you don’t ever have to travel far to find something.

I tell you what, the web version of the above image just doesn’t do it justice.

Werribee South – Image of the week (20)

A single street light in a quiet, out of the way place, crisp night air, a gentle sea breeze and a hint of rain. Perfect.

A nice simple image, conceived and captured in Black & White.

The aim of Image of the week is to show you a little more of what I love to shoot, and most times its something a little different.

Image of the week (8)

Image of the week is a regular blog post thats supposed to run every Friday.

After the first 6 or so posts I realised that friday was not always the best day to post, so now you get an image of the week when ever I find the time!

Either way, the aim is to show you a little more of what I love to shoot, and sometimes its something a little different.

I went out for a little wander tonight with Ryan, who has just purchased a wide angle lens and wanted to try out some landscapes and sunsets. Where as I on the other hand, needed some fresh air after driving to Taylors Lakes this afternoon to pic up our new Red 2 Seater lounge…  (Although I have to admit, it does look great !!)

I shot this in RAW with my slightly custom Monochrome profile, so apart from the cropping, this is how it looked Straight out of camera (SOOC) – perfect.

Feeling a little bit Crabby…??

I locked myself in my studio/office almost all of this week to get some much needed processing/editing done. The last few months have been crazy and exciting and I have loved every minute of it, even if I have taken a lot longer to get things done.

Imagine…

It’s late in the afternoon, I am sitting at my desk with a whole weddings worth of photographs to wander through… I just get started and the phone rings… Yay!! Another wonderful couple wants to meet to dicuss their wedding with me, we chat, I have their date free, so we organise a time to meet. Perfect.

15 minutes later, with a vaguely tingly sort of feeling, I hang up the phone, thinking about how much I love being a Photographer. Now I am back to edting… 27 images later… the phone rings again… Yay !! A family portrait sitting enquiry, 10 minutes later Claire has booked a sitting for 3 weeks time. Perfect.

Again, that same tingly sort of feeling, I sigh, a happy grin on my face as I return to the task of editing… This time I almost find my Mojo as I hit a total of 112 images edited… when the phone rings again… Yay !! Just for something different, its someone from somewhere, wanting me to advertise in their something of some sort… yawn. No thanks.

I check my email and apart from the spam and the usual newsletters and other random stuff, there is an email from a lovely bride, asking if I have the 21th November free. Sigh, unfortunately I don’t, but I can recommend a great photographer if you would like…

By now its almost dinner time, and soon I have to meet with a couple to discuss their Wedding Album design, there’s that tingly sort of feeling again !!

And thats how it has been for months… Day in and day out… And I love every second of it !!

Finally, this afternoon, I got to step out of the office for some time out !! I needed to get outside, I was feeling more than a little caged, and almost a little crabby… (ask my wife, she will tell you!!).

I can assure you that my excuse was valid, I had to pick up 4 print orders from my Lab and drop 2 of them off on the way home, but a detour through Williamstown at sunset couldnt hurt now, could it?

So I had a little drive and a wander around and of course I shot a couple of images… And Yes, I now I feel much better, thanks for asking.

Sunrise

I had the good fortune to be miles from home and wide awake enough to witness 2 sunrises this week.

I pulled out of my driveway at 4.47am on Sunday morning, a trip planned at the last minute, I think it was 10pm the night before, a quick day trip to see my parents and help out on the Farm.

It was exactly 6.27am and just east of Cressy, on the Hamilton Highway, when the sun came up behind me. I stopped by the roadside and set up my tripod in the long damp grass on the embankment between the road and the rail tracks…  and captured a few moments…

The first Sunrise I have seen this year. Yes, thats right, I am not a morning person !

My quick day trip turned into 12 hours of farm work and by the time we were finished, I was beyond tired and incapable of driving the 2 hours home again. So the second sunrise was the following morning. The birds woke me at about 5.30am and from then on no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t sleep. I even tired putting a pillow over my head, but i gave up in the end and dragged myself out of bed, grabbed some toast and my camera bag, jumped in the car and went for a quick 3 minute drive to go and play in the wheat.

Passing Storms

Well, it seems I hit a brick wall a while back with the whole wedding photo blog posting thing due to a number of factors, Family being the biggest I suppose. And there was also a higher number of wedding bookings than I expected as well. 80% more for the winter months and a 50% increase going into spring as well. So yes, I was a busy boy. I shot weddings in a wide variety of locations as well, from Inner city alleys, to historic rural homesteads, from the Mountains of Northeastern Melbourne to the beaches of Frankston and Geelong.

I have about a dozen 1/2 written blog posts that I will hopefully get to finish and post soon…

And so, until then, I leave you with these…

Published Again

Even though it happened last month, I think its only fair I mention that I had several images published in the Local paper.  They were of the Dust Storm that swept Werribee/Wyndham Vale at Noon on 26th June 2008.
Quote from the Werribee Banner Newspaper “Photographer ROB DUNCAN captured these amazing images as a dust storm whipped up by gale-force winds swept across the municipality just before noon last Thursday. ”  The story can be found at werribee.yourguide.com.au/news/local/news/general/dust-up…

Now you might be thinking..  Dude, its Australia, whats the big deal about another dust storm… Well, its currently Winter… it should be.. ahh.. WET… ??!!

Below is the other shot that was published.

As you can see, for a localised event, it was actually a very impressive little dust storm.
