Lest we forget

I think I expressed my feelings pretty well when I blogged about this a year ago.

Today is one of the few days in the year when I actually take a moment to stop and reflect on things… and maybe shed a tear. Today I look back on my families long, proud and its fair to say at times miss guided Military Service history. I say “miss guided” not to diminish what they did or what they went through, but to attempt to convey to you the simple fact that for the most part, they (like so many others) didn’t know what they were getting themselves into. But I suppose thats enough about that…

Like many people, I feel strongly about ANZAC. I was born in Australia, and raised in New Zealand. Dads a Kiwi, Mums an Aussie. Technically I am an Aussie, but I served in the New Zealand Army… You get the idea right…? Good. Enough about me.

And like I said, a picture is worth a thousand words… So here is my thousand.

Simple, Straight Forward… and Cold.

You might be thinking to yourself “why did he use choose those beers…?” Well, thats an easy one, you see Carlton Draught is my Dad’s favorite Aussie beer and Tui is MY favorite beer, and I am about to enjoy one of each in a moment.

Little Red Wagon

Angus got a little red wagon for his birthday, which he thinks is just awesome. I couldn’t agree more!!

We decided to load the wagon with a couple of “friends” (Ali the Alligator and Horace the Horse) and then Angus and I took the loaded wagon to school to pick up his older brother and of course I had a camera with me.

The Dress

Rounding the corner at the top of the stairs, we walked through a door and the hallway lay before us.
Maybe it was the texture of the wall, or its colour, or its length, I am not sure.
But it had an instant effect on me and in my mind I started to plan an image.

A few hours later I captured this.

The upstairs hallway - Oscars in Ballarat.

Yeah, I loved the hallway, and I loved the dress!!

My Melbourne 17

Once again I had the pleasure of being in the city again today, it was a day of meetings. All sorts of exciting news coming soon, you can be sure of that, and to top it all off was my final meeting with two wonderful people to discus their wedding and my photography.

Don’t you just love it when you meet new people and you just hit it off immediately, I do!!

Wedding Proof Books Shipped

The latest batch of 7 proof books has been shipped from my supplier and should arrive in the next week. They apologise for the printing delay, but good things take time I suppose !!

New proof books are one their way!! (image is a representation only and does not show the actual proof books... as they have not arrived yet... obviously)

But lets be excited anyway… as those proof books contain over 3600 wedding images, although not all in the same book, obviously!!

A Cape Otway Wedding – Part 2

Out of the way places like the historic Light Station at Cape Otway make for the perfect intimate wedding venue. Imagine 150 year old bluestone buildings with cracked and peeling whitewash walls among weathered and windswept trees, all sitting atop massive coastal cliffs.

Like I said, the perfect place for a perfect wedding.

You get a strange sense of time at Cape Otway Lighthouse. It’s just one of those lost and lonely out-of-the-way places, offering moments of beautiful quiet, an overwhelming sense of peacefulness, with a rugged and dramatic rhythm all its own.

Meteor over Melbourne

So, I have been too busy for the past 2 weeks to post anything…

Then last night I finished up another client meeting and as I was driving home… I saw this…

What is it..??

I decided to pull over and take a closer look.

Of course I had a camera with me (I always do), but I only had a 135mm lens, great for brides, not the best for photographing strange phenomenon in the sky. But upon closer inspection I could clearly make it out…

It was a meteor, how cool is that?!!

I clicked off a dozen frames, then switched to HD video, which sounds cool, but in reality the meteor was so far away, that in 25seconds of footage, it hardly appears to move at all.

As it got closer to the horizon, and I suspect a lot lower in the atmosphere, a dust trail started to develop. As you can see from the next 2 images, this was backlit by the sun which had already set.

Barwon Heads Wedding Photography

We all know how “interesting” the weather was over the weekend in Victoria, and I have to say while I missed the heaviest of it, it did play havoc with the wedding I photographed the Barwon Heads Golf Club.

In between breaks in the rain and thunder, we wandered out onto the edge of the 13th Beach Golf Links to grab a few quick storm inspired images… Like this!!

Reception Party Animals

I noticed that the wedding reception doesn’t get that much blog time, which is weird because the reception takes up 30-40% of the actual wedding day!!

Gateway in the moonlight

Its amazing what you see while driving home from a client meeting at 10pm. I had pulled over on the side of the road to take a phone call from my lovely wife who just wanted to know if I was on my way, and then told me to take care and travel safely. Looking out the passenger window of the car as I hung up the phone, this scene lay before me… I couldnt resist grabbing a camera and stepping out of the car. With the full moon low in the sky and the cold wind howling, it kind of had a Werewolf feel to it.

I know, its kinda weird… and I was in two minds about posting this one, but its just so different I couldn’t help myself.

Those squiggly lines in the sky are actually stars… It was a 1.6 second exposure and like I said it was kind of cold and very windy… so keeping the camera steady was not really an option, but it fits the whole mood of the scene perfectly.
